Willie howard Mays, born May 6, 1931 in Westfield, Alabama. Played for the Birmingham Black Barons (Negro Leagues), 1948-1950; Trenton Giants (Inter-State League), 1950; Minneapolis Millers (American Association), 1951; New York Giants, 1951-1952; in the military, 1952-1953; New York Giants, 1954-1957; San Francisco Giants, 1958-1972; New York Mets, 1972- 1973. All-Star, 1954-1973. 1951 National League Rookie of the Year. 1954, 1965 National League Most Valuable Player. 1954 Association Press Male Athlete of the Year. 1963, 1968 All-Star Game Most Valuable Player. Willie Mays was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979. In December 1998 Willie Mayes received the Lifetime Achievement Award from New York Magazine.
